  Billy Taylor was honored on 6 October 1997 as a recipient of the 1997 New York State Governor's Arts Awards for his work as a pianist. The event, hosted at Lincoln Center by Gov George Pataki and his wife Libby, also honored actor Christopher Reeve, choreographer Jerome Robbins, artist Chuck Close, and philanthropists Kitty Carlisle Hart and Sanford Weill.
