ARKADIA JAZZ RELEASES LEGENDARY ALBUM BY PE DE BOI
Only Recording by New York's Legendary Power Samba Band Is Back in Print
Arkadia Records is pleased to announce Power Samba Band, the release of
percussionist Guilherme Franco's Brazilian dance band Pe De Boi. "New York is
a musical crossroads unlike any other," says Arkadia founder and CEO Bob
Karcy, "and Pe De Boi weds the city's rich musical culture-jazz, blues, rock,
salsa, and more-with the rhythms of Brazil. This is world music at its very
best."
The band's name literally means "foot of an ox," and is Brazilian slang for a
musician with a great sense of rhythm. And with more than 10 percussionists
appearing on the disc, this is certainly a band with rhythm to spare.
Drummer-percussionist Guilherme Franco, who's played with everyone from jazz
pianist McCoy Tyner to Brazilian pop star Jorge Ben, brought together some of
New York's finest percussionists in a rhythm section that generates a boiling
groove that pushes the music irresistibly forward. Jazz players such as
saxophonist Joe Ford, pianists Dave Kikoski and Jorge Dalto, and Sonny
Rollins' trombonist Clifton Anderson add a dash of passionate jazz soloing to
the surging beat. The result is utterly unique party music that will get
listeners dancing without insulting their intelligence.
Pe De Boi mixes several influences into their powerful brand of Brazilian
samba. From the rolling Brazilian-jazz beat of the upbeat "Essa Nega" to the
joyous Brazilian-pop flavored "Zazueira," to the funky "Samba Summer," to the
driving percussion jam "Drums Evolution," Pe De Boi establishes itself as one
of the world's premiere dance bands. But they also give the head something to
do while feet tap. Jazz and blues flavor "Reza Forte," which features
muscular soul-jazz soloing from altoist Joe Ford and pianist Dave Kikoski.
The post-Coltrane jazz avant-garde even finds its way into samba in the
outrageous "Sequence Part 1" and "Sequence Part II," two innovative tracks
unlike anything else in Brazilian music. This release will introduce a new
generation of listeners to the heady abandon of one of the most innovative
bands working in any kind of music.
A full-service label started in 1997 by Bob Karcy, Arkadia Jazz has already
earned wide acclaim as "The Artists' Choice". The label has released CDs by
Benny Golson, Dr. Billy Taylor, Dave Liebman, and Kenny Drew, Jr. Recent
releases include Passionata, Kenny Drew, Jr.'s, tribute to his late father;
and Benny Golson's Tenor Legacy featuring James Carter, Harold Ashby, and
Branford Marsalis in a tribute to great jazz saxophonists of the past.
Percussionist Franco and Pe De Boi bassist Alberto Beserra collaborated on a
previous Arkadia release, Nova Bossa Nova.
