An African-American who came of age during
the Great Depression of the 1930s, Richard Wright was forced to contend with the twin
evils of poverty and racism. Embittered by his experiences, Wright began to
contribute pieces to radical publications such as the Daily Worker, a
socialist-labor newspaper associated with the Communist Party. The same sense of
mistrust and anger drove him to write Native Son, a powerful indictment of racial
hatred and social injustice, the force of which still resonates today.
