- "Pink Elephant Magic"
This tune just seemed to write itself. When it was finished, it sounded like and
felt like Pink Elephant Magic to me!
- "Ghost Butter"
There is a Tasty Freeze in the Village in New
York City. One day they had a new flavor of their product: they said it was made of
peanut better and German chocolate cake. It was white (surprise!) and delicious ...
and it was called "Ghost Butter." After I wrote this tune, I noticed that
it seemed to describe this refreshing flavor.
- "Wave"
This is a classic Jobim original. It portrays his genius very well! I altered
the harmonies of the bridge of the tune to modernize it a bit. This is an
all-time favorite of so many people including myself.
- "What's Your Choice, Rolls
Royce?" and
- "Beethoven Meets the Millennium
in Spain"
Although these two compositions may not seem
to have much in common, they were composed at a residency that I conducted in Florida at
the Atlantic Conference for the Arts. One class project was to write a
"hit" tune and the other was to write "Beethoven Meets the Millennium in
Spain." The class did lots of work with great success. I did every
project with them and these two compositions are the result of my work. "Beethoven" is extensive and covers a lot of musical territory! "What's Your Choice, Rolls Royce?" has a bluesy feel, with lyrics which seemed to unfold very easily
with the melody.
- "Strange Meadowlark"
This is Dave Brubeck's composition on the Take Five album that I had never heard
until Bob Karcy suggested that I take a listen to it. I thought it was beautiful and
descriptive and so I made a special solo arrangement of it.
- "Tico Tico"
I was on a bus going to play at a club in NYC
and I noticed this tune was running through my mind in 5/4 tempo! I thought
oh, this is interesting so let's try it! So that night at work we
played it it's lots of fun to do it in this time-meter.
- "In Vogue"
This song has both a haunting melody and quality that makes you feel something familiar,
full of depth, and at the same time a little mysterious or elusive. It seems to be a
favorite of both performers and listeners.
- "Cram 'n' Exam"
This tune is dedicated especially to my students at Berklee College of Music during Exam
Week. They have to cram so many studies into such a short time for their
exams.
- "Filene's"
This song describes shopping one Sunday afternoon at Filene's (for the first time) in
Boston with my friend Stephanie Tiernan (VP of the piano department at Berklee College of
Music). Both of my daughters loved this tune, so I decided to include it in my
performances. It is also the favorite of a special three-year-old fan I have who
lives in Schenectady, New York.
